«Malleus Maleficarum» (1988) is the debut album by Pestilence.
Pestilence began in 1986 with the lineup of Patrick Mameli (bass, guitar, vocals), Randy Meinhard (guitar), and Marco Foddis (drums). After releasing the demo «Dysentery» in 1987, they were joined by Martin van Drunen (future Asphyx), who replaced Mameli on vocals. The newly reformed band released a second demo, «The Penance,» and then began work on «Malleus Maleficarum,» which was released in September.

The album was originally released on cassette by RC Records (a sublabel of Roadracer Records, which later changed its name to Roadrunner Records) and is considered a classic example of early death metal fused with thrash. It preceded Death and their album «Leprosy» by a month, as well as Morbid Angel, whose debut wasn’t released until 1989.

A must-have for all Pestilence fans, reaching back to the roots of the genre and the beginnings of the legendary group from the Netherlands.

Patrick Mameli: «We were very young and inexperienced back then. We were trying to find our own style. I think we did well. The album is very thrash with hints of Possessed, Slayer and Infernal Majesty.»
